Cancer Resources . . .

  • National Cancer Institute (English). The National Cancer Institute is the nation’s primary agency for cancer research, and their web site provides information about cancer, clinical trials, statistics, research programs, funding and more.
  • National Cancer Institute (Spanish). The NCI is committed to reducing cancer health disparities by making cancer information readily available to underserved populations. The Web site features themes of prevention, detection, treatment, and survivorship. Highlights of the Web site include 1) information organized by types of cancer, 2) myths and beliefs, 3) support and resources in your community, and 4) dictionary of cancer terms.
  • Cancer Care Outcomes Research & Surveillance Consortium (CanCORS). Funded by the NCI, this five-year program is a collaboration of seven teams of investigators from around the U.S. seeking to evaluate the quality of cancer care in this country. The goal of the CanCORS Consortium is to examine the care delivered to population-based cohorts of newly diagnosed patients with lung and colorectal cancer in multiple regions of the country and to assess outcomes associated with that care.
  • American Cancer Society (English). The American Cancer Society is a nationwide, community-based voluntary health network of services and organization fighting cancer by providing education and support, with resources for family, friends and professionals.
  • American Cancer Soceity (Spanish). The American Cancer Society offers information, support, and more in Spanish.
  • Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention (Spanish). The CDC is recognized as the lead federal agency for protecting the health and safety of people and serves as the national focus for developing and applying disease prevention and control, environmental health, and health promotion and education activities designed to improve the health of people in the United States.
  • LIVESTRONG (Spanish). LIVESTRONG’s Spanish-language website provides information on the common physical, emotional and day-to-day concerns of Hispanic/Latino cancer survivors. In addition to cancer information, the website includes sixteen videos of Hispanic/Latino cancer survivors sharing their experiences with cancer.
  • Equal Access Newsletter. The NCI’s Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities publishes a quarterly newsletter that examines the burden of cancer, which is often greater for the poor, ethnic minorities, and the uninsured than for the general population.
  • Florida Breast Cancer Coalition Research Foundation (FBCCRF). Affiliated with the National Breast Cancer Coalition, the FBCCRF is a non-profit grassroots organization dedicated to the eradication of breast cancer through advocacy, education and research.
  • Asbestos.com – The Leading Mesothelioma Cancer Resource. Exposure to asbestos has proven to result in a wide range of health conditions, including mesothelioma, a deadly cancer that attacks the lining of the lungs, heart, or abdomen.   • Mesothelioma Group is a small team of healthcare professionals, patient advocates, and communication specialists who have one goal: to lead the way in supporting and encouraging mesothelioma patients and their families. The group aims to increase awareness, improving survival rates and life expectancy.

  • https://chess.chsra.wisc.edu/espanol/Home/Home.aspx CHESS (Comprehensive Health Enhancement Support System) Web Site is an online resource for Spanish-speaking breast cancer patients and their families and is funded by the NCI. The site, launched in May 2006 by the University of Wisconsin-Madison Center of Excellence in Cancer Communications Research, is called Conviviendo con el Cancer de Seno, — a translation of Living With Breast Cancer. It offers an extensive database of original content and also serves as an information clearinghouse linking directly to other high-quality educational materials in Spanish for Latinas. In partnership with Redes En Acción, the site also makes available stories from the Redes-produced Nuestras Historias publication about the experiences of Hispanic breast cancer survivors.
  • http://www.hispanichealth.info Hispanic Health Web Site: A new Hispanic health information portal could put to the test the idea that the Internet has the potential to serve as the great equalizer of health care. The Web site, HispanicHealth.info, was recently launched by the not-for-profit National Hispanic Medical Association to become a one-stop resource for health care professionals seeking to obtain and share information on Hispanic health care. Future plans for the portal include hosting moderated discussions and adding Spanish-language resources.

  • http://www.lhi.org Latino Health Institute located in New England. Provides services for prevention and treatment of illnesses that are present in the Latino community. Also organizes recreational activities for the Latino community.
  • http://www.crn.org Clinic in Kansas City Missouri that provides bilingual and culturally sensitive to Hispanic patients regardless of ability to pay. In Spanish and English.
  • http://www.aidsnyc.org/cwha/aids.html Caribbean Women’s Health Association, Inc. Community Service Center located in New York targets Hispanics, Caribbean-American and Haitians with HIV/AIDS prevention education. Also has support groups for those that have AIDS and HIV.
  • http://www.critpath.org/galaei The Gay and Lesbian Latino Association AIDS Education Initative located in Philedelphia. They have a number of different projects geared to Gays, Lesbians, and bisexuals of all ages aimed at reducing the spread of AIDS in the community.
  • http://www.saaf.org/latino.htm Salud Es Poder: Latino Men’s Health Project located in Tucson, Arizona works to reduce the incidence level of HIV/AIDS on both sides of the border. It is an intervention for the gay and bisexual men in the area to help in establishing a support network between them. Spanish and English.

Mentors prepare minority students for additional education:

  • https://exitotraining.org Éxito! Latino Cancer Research Leadership Training, a program of the Institute for Health Promotion Research (IHPR) at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, offers an annual summer institute and internships to increase the number of master’s-degree-level Latinos who pursue a doctoral degree and a career in Latino health disparities and cancer control research.
  • http://www.risingfarmworker.org/ The Migrant Business Leaders Program (MBL) is looking for students with a migrant background who will apply to begin business school in the 2006-2007 school year. MBL will provide intensive mentoring resources to get students prepared for grueling admissions process at a prestigious MBA program. The mentoring sessions will aim to be equivalent to those sessions received by wealthy and resourceful MBA candidates who often pay top dollar for professional assistance during the MBA admissions process. The mentoring will include assisting with financial planning, GMAT test preparation, and business school applications.
